PPP, JI candidates file nominations for mayoral election

Party leaders trade verbal barbs, claim victory at hand

KARACHI:

Candidates of Pakistan Peoples Party and Jamaat Islami filed their nomination papers for mayoral election on last day of filing the papers.

Sindh Government Spokesperson Barrister Murtaza Wahab submitted the nomination papers for the mayor of Karachi and Salman Murad as deputy mayor at the Regional Election Commission Office. PPP stalwart Najmi Alam is his covering candidate.

PPP Sindh President Nirsar Khuro, provincial ministers Nasir Hussain Shah, Saeed Ghani, lawyers, officials, and other supporters were in large numbers outside the Election Commission office.

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Naeemur Rehman filed the papers for mayor with Junaid Mukati, and Saifuddin Advocate.

Moreover, Saifuddin, Qazi Sadruddin, Salman Murad, Irshad Shar Advocate, Karamullah Waqasi, Zeeshan Zaib, Akram Awan and PML-N's Khawaja Shoaib have filed papers for the city's deputy mayor's post.

The total number of seats in the City Council is 371 and the Karachi mayor needs the magic number of 186 to win the majority in the council.

The election of the mayor and deputy mayor will take place on June 15. Today, June 10, was the last day to submit the nomination papers. The ECP schedule stated that the Returning Officer will check the nomination papers on June 11 (tomorrow) and the finalized list of candidates will be released on June 14. On June 16, the Returning Officers will announce the results whereas the successful candidates will take oath on June 19.
