The Karachi port has put in place all necessary measures to brace for stormy weather amid forecast of tropical cyclone Biparjoy making landfall anytime between Wednesday and Thursday.

As a precautionary measure, standby tugs and mooring lines have been positioned to assist ships at berths. If berthing becomes unsafe, the ships can be promptly sent into the open sea. Accessible passages from the berths to the sea allow for efficient evacuation in case of emergencies.

Consequently, it is mandatory for tugs, pilot boats, and cargo boats to be fully prepared for any eventuality. Dredgers and boats will be securely fastened with double ropes, and small boats will be relocated to safe areas to protect them from wind and water pressure.

Comprehensive security measures have been implemented for all types of cargo, automobiles, sensitive goods, and valuables. Empty containers are being cleared from the scene using air removal methods. Storing empty containers at container yards and ports in a row of more than two is strictly prohibited.

Furthermore, safety measures have also been implemented at oil installations to prevent potential gas leaks. Objects that may pose a hazard by becoming airborne from rooftops and elevated areas have been removed.

Backup plans are in place for the communication network, and alternative connectivity options through fibre optic and wireless connections have been established for CCTV camera monitoring and surveillance systems.

Technical personnel are available round the clock, and medical staff has been instructed to remain vigilant. Emergency medical services and ambulances are prepared and ready. Backup generators are in place to ensure continuous power supply management. Fire extinguishers are prepared, volunteers have been briefed on emergency protocols, and all necessary arrangements have been made for the swift mobilisation of portable equipment.

The port authorities have issued an emergency order to safeguard ships and port infrastructure. It states that all shipping activities will be prohibited if winds exceed 25 nautical miles, and night navigation will not be permitted. Vessels carrying vehicles are restricted from operating in sea breezes exceeding 20 nautical miles. Boat captains have the authority to request early departures to relocate their ships away from storm impacts in response to changing weather conditions.

The ships currently within the ports and berthed must be prepared to transport vessels to open waters in case of an emergency. Double ropes and wires should be used to secure the ships.

Additionally, two emergency frequencies have been provided for effective communication among ships. Captains of ships in the outer anchorage have been advised to remain vigilant and keep their vessels in motion rather than at rest.
