KARACHI:

The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) has condemned the arrest of Geo News Producer Zubair Anjum and termed it a step against the freedom of the press and freedom of expression.

In a joint statement, CPNE President Syed Irshad Ahmed Arif and Secretary General Ejazul Haq said that arresting a media person from his house in the dead of night contravened Article 19 of the Constitution.

They said that on one hand, the Sindh government established a commission for the protection of journalists through legislation, and on the other hand, media persons are being arrested without any explanation provided.

They urged the Sindh chief minister, information minister and home minister to take notice of Anjum’s arrest and demanded his immediate release.
