LAHORE:

Former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) stalwart, Aleem Khan, was nominated as the president of the newly formed political party, Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP).

Earlier this month, senior politician Jahangir Khan Tareen formally announced the formation of the IPP with the promise of working for economic and social reforms in the country.

Tareen – once a close confidant of the PTI Chairman but had a falling out in the later years – announced the new party at a news conference in Lahore with over 100 PTI defectors and deserters joining its ranks.

Speaking alongside former PTI stalwarts, Aleem Khan, Ali Zaidi, Imran Ismail, Tanveer Ilyas and others, Tareen said that they were launching the party to fulfil the “teachings of Quaid-i-Azam and the dreams of Allama Iqbal”.

In a tweet today, Tareen announced Aleem Khan's presidency for the party.

"I am pleased to announce Abdul Aleem Khan as the President of the IPP," he said adding that Aamir Mehmood Kiyani would serve as the party's Secretary General while Awn Chaudhary would serve as the Additional Secretary General and Spokesperson of the party as well as of the Patron-in-Chief.

Further announcements are expected to follow soon.

Earlier, Aleem Khan had praised Tareen’s decision to form a new party, saying that the situation had become highly chaotic after May 9 violence which caused concern among the patriotic Pakistanis.

He had acknowledged Tareen's efforts in bringing those people together in one party. He said that they had spent the past 12 years at one platform, dedicating their energies to achieving their goals. “But regrettably, those goals remained unfulfilled,” he lamented.
